Immediately after ordering it, I got an email from Sara telling me that if there is anything at all they can do, please contact her. I like that, and I think other people do to.
I literally got it the next day. I ordered it in the evening and got it in the morning! All in my pajamas.
We tried it on the course today and this what I think:
PROS:
1. Returns the yardage almost instantaneously. I just point and there is the yardage instantly. I compared it with the Bushnell and they are the same.
2. The Pin yardage is like that of my Bushnell, It locks on and as long as there is nothing between the range finder and the pin, it will return the correct yardage.
3. Very simple operation. Point it and press the power button and you get the yardage. If you want the Pin press the Mode button and it will show a flag.
4. Excellent clarity. It is very, very clear and the 6x magnification is what makes this one better than my Bushnell. You can also focus by turning the eye piece to get a very sharp image. I can definitely see the green from 150 yards so it helped me know which side of the green to shoot for.
5. Fantastic case. It is like a small camera case and there is a belt loop and also a little nub that goes into something like a holster.
6. It is very small and light. I just put it in my pocket.
CONS:
1. It is black. I changed the strap out with an electric blue strap so that it is more visible. I will definitely lose this in the Cart because the golf cart interior is black.
SUMMARY:
I like this so much I gave my Bushnell to my daughter so I have the newer Ranger finder. She plays better than I do so I need it more than she does. I highly recommend this product and their customer service.
I don't give it 5 stars yet because one time at the range I tried reading the distance of a very close flag (roughly 5o yards). It came back as 75 yards. I measured that several times and always got that distance. This was in pin seeking mode. I am not sure why it was off and I should have tried the other modes to see if I could have gotten a more accurate reading. To be fair, I didn't have another way to verify the true distance, but I have my doubts about that one reading. That said, I did check distances at multiple flags at the range against the ranges posted at the sign and it was within 1-2 yards in each case. So my only concern is if pin seeking mode doesn't read very close flags accurately.
Update: I'm bumping this to 5 stars. I am very happy with it. It is easy to use and I've had no issues getting true distances from it. It helps to understand how it works, especially when in pin-seeking mode. In that mode, it takes a reading at whatever you are pointing at, then you pan left or right to pass over the flag and it will see the change in distance and identify the flag and distance. I suspect it considers a flag found if a closer object than the initial reading is some threshold closer (say, 20 yards). Anyhow, with the problem I reported earlier, I suspect I got an initial reading of distant trees (>300 yds), then inadvertently panned over a pin 75 yds away before panning past my intended flag. So, I just have to be aware of what I am panning past when trying to get a reading.
I also don't mind not having elevation calculations. They aren't allowed by the USGA anyhow and it is simple enough to add/subtract a club based on my own perception that the target is above or below me. So I think this is a great device for the price.
Top reviews from other countries
I’ve used it quite a lot since buying it and can honestly say it’s been a great buy
Very simple to use. I play mostly at my own club so pretty much use it for approach shots to greens. The pin finder mode, where the device outputs the distance to the closest object it locks onto in direct line of site, is excellent.....no more distances to the trees in the background! And because that closest distance found is shown constantly on screen after you’ve determined it, you can move the device around after exiting this mode and it still displays. On pin finder mode it took me a little while to work out a decent, never fail, quick technique for obtaining distances to flags. I found a post by another user that suggested zigzagging up & down the flagstick length. This always gets a reliable lock on the flagstick distance.
It’s quick to use the device and doesn’t hold me up, but I tend to get to my ball and use it when partners are playing shots......I suppose I’m saying, if you play golf sensibly anyway, and are normally ready to play when it’s your turn, this won’t put any significant time onto shots. I store it loose on the bag during play so it’s quick to get to. Not sure therefore how easy it is to get it out of the protective carry case if that’s how some carry it.
I have started to wear glasses and find these can interfere with use (probably because I can’t get used to wearing the stupid things yet). However, the magnification on the viewfinder makes use without my glasses in place quite easy.
The battery’s are still going strong after many rounds so I think getting a full playing season from one set sounds reasonable, but it’ll always depend on how you use it
Because it’s stored loose in the bag, I’m not especially precious with it during play. It appears to be standing up to general use very well. Seems to not mind the wet. I have however seen a lot of discussion around the majority of the cheaper devices, that they don’t always work reliably when there’s moisture in the air, but I’ve not seen this with the tectectec. I will caveat everything I’ve just said by mentioning the fact that I’ve used this device through the driest summer for decades and it’s been given a pretty easy ride so far.
In summary, good price for a solid, reliable device, that does a simple function very well. If I have any longer term reliability issues I’ll update this review but it looks as though it should have as much chance of holding up as any other device I’ve seen.
Edit: August 2020. Two seasons of use and it’s still going strong. I fitted the neoprene cover I got as a free gift from Tectectec and the device appears to be pretty resilient. I don’t abuse it but I don’t treat it that carefully. It lives out of its case in one of my trolley bag pockets. I’ve still not had to replace the batteries. Some who use it constantly on every shot or play more than me, may have to, but it’s not a big cost issue. It gives reliable yardages when I compare to other rangefinders, budget or Bushnell price range. It works in the rain but I don’t really play in the rain much anymore as I can pick and choose my days. It’s quick to use. Basically, it does what it says it’ll do and seems that it’ll last a while yet. I’m glad I bought it.
Edit: November 2021. Still going strong, still providing accurate yardages. I’ve changed the batteries now (sorry Greta, non-rechargeable). I’ll be honest in that there are probably a few decent budget range finders on the market these days, that would be equivalent to the TecTecTec, but kudos to this company; they were a trailblazer, and given they still sell these in volume after a few years, probably says more than reviews like mine ever can.
